TITLE

Clinical Pharmacology

DIRECTOR

Weinshilboum, Richard M . M.D.

SUMMARY

Clinical Pharmacology involves the study and understanding of the interaction between therapeutic agents and humans. This discipline is a major backbone of one of the most important interventions, the use of therapeutic agents, which health practitioners use to treat illness in humans. This is a program to support training in Clinical Pharmacology for US citizens or permanent residents with M.D., M.D.-Ph.D., DO or equivalent degrees. Support will be for the trainees in the laboratory-based programs of the faculty in Clinical Pharmacology. Two new positions will be available each year and training will be recommended for a two year period. Twenty faculty members will participate in the program from Divisions and Departments at Mayo Clinic Rochester, including Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Cardiovascular Diseases, Oncology, Anesthesiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Psychiatry and Psychology, Endocrinology, Nephrology and Molecular Medicine. Trainees will follow the requirements so that they will be able to be board certified in Clinical Pharmacology. The laboratory-based programs represent a wide variety of endeavors in pharmacologic research, including pharmacogenetics, drug metabolism, mechanism of action of drugs, neuropharmacology, inflammatory bowel disease, signal transduction, epidemiology, cancer therapy and clinical trials, patch clamp electrophysiology techniques, vaccine research, pharmacology of the vasculature, the development of antitumor agents, etc. An extensive didactic program will also be offered including the responsible conduct of research, biostatics, design of clinical research, and techniques in molecular biology. Further inquiries regarding this program may contact Dr. Richard Weinshilboum, Program Director, at weinshilboum.richard@mayo.edu.
