In 2002, the Department of Medicine commissioned and founded, with the philanthropic support of the benefactors Robert and Arlene Kogod, the Kogod Program on Aging - the first integrated program on aging at the Mayo Clinic. Spanning the spectrum from discovery to clinical practice and education, the Program is a comprehensive undertaking, embracing the entire life cycle. The emphasis of the Program relies on the creation of a unique multi-disciplinary center of excellence where scientists and clinicians work together studying the biology of development and aging, and how age-related disorders affect patient care. The Kogod's support gives Mayo the opportunity to pursue National Institutes of Health funding and integrated high-quality age-related research. The priorities of the Program are on developing technology, fund the career development of young investigators, and pursue programmatic opportunities to advance the science.
